Joss Whedon did, in fact, do some things right.

I know that with all the grim revelations about the guy and how he treated people on set, all of his flaws as a craftsman have been magnified and subjected to harsher scrutiny.

But I believe that Joss Whedon is not this boogeyman that started the downfall of the MCU and "ruined" characters.

Sure, he may have strayed from the morally acceptable path. But as an artist, he does have some noteworthy achievements.

The character of Loki being one of them. The God of Mischief in The Avengers is a clever, brutal and formidable force to be reckoned with, but there is still a hinge of sympathy to him, and he definitely brims with charisma. Much of that stems from Tom Hiddleston's performance, but also Joss Whedon's script and the way he directed Hiddleston in those scenes.

Same with Tony Stark, whose character was successfully elaborated upon in both Avengers movies in a natural and consistent way. Whedon deftly expanded the themes present in Iron Man 3 and The Avengers, put his own spin on it and then handed Steven McFeely and Christopher Markus the key to further open more doors for Iron Man.

Also, Ultron and Vision. The wonderful dichotomy in AoU. Again, much is owed to the wonderful thespians Bettany and Spader, but also again, to Whedon and his craft that bound it all together. The two gentlemen's line delivery was absolutely top tier, but the BARS they dropped? All Whedon. He is responsible for that famed conversation in the forest and the overall dynamic that makes the movie work so well. Vision is incredibly well thought out as a character to the point he becomes the movie's narrative MVP in less than 10 minutes of screentime.

Also, Age of Ultron started Wanda on her path to become a fully realized character and brought a human touch to Clint.

So yeah. JW did do some things right.
