Loki Episode 5 question

So episode 5 was fantastic but there is something I don't get. In season 1 it was said that all.members of the TVA has been variants in the past but their memories have been removed and thez started to work for the TVA. After seeing this episode I don't get it anymore. What makes the people variants? Loki is easy to explain but what have a mere prisoner like Casey done?

Bitter thoughts after Loki ending

Alright so I just finished Loki and I just…ugh idk. Yall im so sad I get that he gets his throne and he helps everyone. But I just wanted him to have friends and be happy. I know it’s unrealistic but I just wanted him to have friends and be happy. I think it sucks that he wont get that maybe that’s just me because sometimes I feel like Loki in the aspect of being looked down on.
