The Boxes of Crayons Analogy- my attempt to rationalize the MCU's multiverse rules
Oh boy. The Multiverse. This is a mess. A ton of contradicting information, concepts, rules, faces. BUT. I have my own solution. Is it canon? Probably not. Is it defendable? Probably not. Does Marvel even know how their own multiverse works? Probably not. This is my attempt to organize the spaghetti mess we call the Multiverse Saga- The Boxes of Crayons Analogy
You have a ton of boxes of Crayons. However, these are not your normal boxes of Crayons. Oh no, they're sorted into their own individual color rules. This one is all Warm colors, this one is all Cold colors, this one is just shades of Orange. But they're all still Crayon boxes. Let's take a look at the Warm colors box, or the main MCU. Oh wait. There is only ONE Crayon in this box currently: the Sacred Timeline. I don't think the Sacred Timeline is just one timeline. I think it's one timeline and several branches that the One Above All pulled aside and separated from the other Crayon boxes to prevent another Color Wars. Endgame's plot hinges on there being at least a few branches. But that's all part of the OAA's plan. What he can't have is a new Crayon. That's what the TVA is for. They're a pencil sharpener, outside the box but following a goal within it. Because a branch left alone for too long eventually will become an entirely new Crayon (or timeline). But, once the toddlers break into the OAA's room and stab him, the Crayon box is filled with new Crayons, and the box is thrown into the pile with the other Crayon boxes. These NEW Crayons in the box are the timelines we see in the Multiverse of Madness; separate timelines, but with crucial events and concepts shared between them (Thanos, a Doctor Strange, Mordo, Book of Vishanti, Wanda, etc). Timelines operate under a hierarchy of branching-ness. If one of these Crayons strayed MORE, we have a new box. And this is ALLLL to justify the 3 Peters and the 4 Stranges.
Why do the 3 Peters look different if the 4 Stranges look the same? Because the other Peters come from other boxes. They don't have any Avengers, or Illuminati's, or Thaneese, or anything else related to the main Crayon box. But they're still Crayon boxes. They just so happen to all share a shade of red: Spiderman. Since all the Stranges come from the same box, they all share Benabundles Thundersnatch's face. The What If? timelines also come from the same box. But, now that the main Crayon box is in the pile with the other Crayon boxes, these different boxes can now cross over.
"Oh, so why did America only travel through one box?" Because her powers aren't developed yet. She's still a novice. Eventually, with enough training, she'll be able to go to new boxes. But the Kangs have perfected the art of Box Hoping and can go to any box they please. The Quantum Realm exists in only one box, so it can only travel to and create new branches in one box (Endgame). Magic exists throughout ALL the boxes, so spells can rip holes to other boxes (No Way Home). The Fox universe, Fantastic 4 duology, the Venom verse, and the other early 2000s abominations we don't talk about belong to their own boxes too.
But, with the one piles, we now enter the new phase of the Crayon saga: Color Wars. All these boxes will begin crossing over, and soon we'll make an entire rainbow of colors!
I sound like an insane madman, but so does everyone else trying to explain the Multiverse. This is my own little way of explaining all this. Is it right? No. Will Loki Season 2 demolish this with a sledgehammer? Yes. But gosh dang it, let me have my clever analogy!
