Idea for an AU story where Thanos' method is different

So Thanos still wants to use the infinity stones to prevent overpopulation but this time his plan is to put limits on the population such as limiting lifespans e.g. once humans reach a certain age even if they're healthy they instantly drop dead, reducing fertility, etc. His inner circle of minions help him with managing the population.

However, Thanos lets the power get to his head (yes I know he wasn't exactly the sanest person to begin with) and becomes more paranoid and tyrannical and different factions across the universe unite against him. Meanwhile Mephisto has infiltrated Thanos' inner circle and plans to take the gauntlet from Thanos.
