Why Feige is 'right' and Iman Vellani is 'wrong' about the MCU's number

If you're not aware, the Ms. Marvel star has been open about arguing with Kevin Feige on the decision in DS:MoM to officially label the MCU as universe 616. Her argument being that there is prior canon in the comics that establishes the MCU existing in the Marvel multiverse and already having a designation of 199999. While I was firmly on her side at the time, I've switched sides and here's why.

With the multiverse being revealed in Phase 4 and clearly being a big part of Phase 5 and beyond, I believe the reason that Feige is co-opting the designation typically applied to the main universe in the comics is because as more universes are exposed in the MCU, 616 as a baseline to frame others in relation to is a parallel to the comics that longtime fans will understand and appreciate. In other words, if by Secret Wars we are introduced to other universes that mirror other known comic universes (e.g., 1610, 311, 928) it will be convenient shorthand to use the same numbering as Easter eggs for those in the know. The end result being that the main MCU Earth being 616 is no conflict with the comics as they don't even exist in the same multiverse.
